Why Winter Moving Requires Extra Planning
Your Essential Winter Moving Checklist
- Monitor the weather forecast - Keep a close eye on conditions for your moving day. Heavy snowfall or ice storms may warrant rescheduling. At Macho Movers, we communicate proactively if conditions look dangerous.
- Salt and shovel walkways - Clear all paths between your door and the moving truck. Lay down salt or sand the night before and again on moving morning. This protects both you and your movers from slips.
- Protect your floors - Lay down plastic sheeting, old towels, or cardboard runners from the entrance through high-traffic areas. Boots tracking in snow and slush can damage hardwood and carpet.
- Keep essentials accessible - Pack a winter survival kit with warm clothing layers, hand warmers, hot drinks in a thermos, phone chargers, and flashlights (sunset comes early in January and February).
- Wrap furniture in moving blankets - Cold and moisture can damage wood finishes and leather upholstery. Ensure all furniture is properly blanket-wrapped before exposure to outdoor air.
- Use plastic bins instead of cardboard - Cardboard boxes weaken when wet. If it's snowing, plastic bins will keep your belongings dry during the trip from house to truck.
- Warm up your vehicle - If you're driving to your new home, start your car early. Also ensure your new home's heat is turned on before the movers arrive so you're not unloading into a freezing house.
